Australia's Steve Conroy - Internet Villain of the Year

Stephen Conroy, the Australian Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, has been named Internet Villain of the Year by the UK Internet Service Providers' Association.

And by golly, he's English, he deserves the title and a whole lot more.

The Minister wants to filter the internet, at the ISP level.

The other 2009 Nominees were...

The EU Parliament on its support for the Telecom Package on cookies, meaning that every time you enter a site there will be a popup window informing you of the impending cookie as though you didn't know.

Oh Mon Dieu! President Nicolas Sarkozy for supporting the HADOPI law that would have allowed sanctions against internet users accused of copyright violations and fortunately it was struck down by the Constitutional Council of France, ruling that "the Internet is a component of the freedom of expression".

And last but by no means least Baroness Vadera, for excluding a number of ISPs and Rights Holders in agreeing a Memorandum of Understanding that was exclusive and ineffective in progressing relations between the two industries.

Back to our big winner...

The beloved WikiLeaks, which was founded by Australians, has published an updated list of the blacklisted sites.

The sites cannot be reached from a few places in Australia... but they can be reached through a simple proxy...

The black list includes a dentist from Queensland... lol, a pet care facility... lol, a canteen... lol, an anti-abortion clinic because it some ugly fetus' pictures, a site advocating legal euthanasia, another that likes Satanism and some Christian ones...

Several of Australia's biggest ISPs pulled out of the trials and have urged the government to drop the plan.

But the Minister is adamant...
His behavior is typical of any self-righteous zealot...

We say, by all means, eliminate child pornography, draft a new law and have the websites end with an .xxx instead of the .com or .net, or what have you...
But no... Big Brother Steve Conroy wants to become our kids' nanny, instead of demanding and expecting the parents to supervise their children...

He used the George Bush tactic... if you are not with me, you support the pornography sites!!!

Hell No, we are not supporting the pornographic websites Minister...
We are supporting our freedom to choose and it is your job to regulate those sites and make them visible with the .xxx!!!
Earth calling PM Kevin Rudd to veto Steven Conroy's moronic internet filter...
Conroy's stubbornness and arrogance are ruining the Rudd Labor government...
Is it really a labor government Madam Deputy PM?
You could have fooled all of us...

So be it... go ahead... destroy your government and while you are at it... please send Conroy back to England... come June 30, 2011, his term in the Senate expires and he will be voted out... the voters will make sure of that...

The fear mongering will not work...

Kevin Rudd you have disappointed us...

Please people GetUp, rather sit down and sign the Petition Save The Net...

Here are a few proxy tools for you...

Psiphon, JAP Anonymity, The Onion Router (Tor)
